Surviving the IRS

But in this one instance you get to stick it to The Man. There's a Federal Tax Credit to make energy efficient updates to your home. The Federal Tax Credit ends on December 31, so there's still a little time.

In Utah, we can get a free audit, with the funny commercials ThermWise program.

From their website:

Step 1: CONTACT

Step 1: CONTACT

E-mail Questar Gas today at In-HomeAudit@ThermWise.com or call 800-695-7375(Monday through Friday from 7:00 am - 5:00 pm) to schedule a home energy audit appointment with one of our experienced Questar Gas technicians.
Step 2: DISCOVER

Step 2: DISCOVER

Get ready to learn about your home as our technician completes a thorough assessment that usually takes about 90 minutes. He will check your windows, doors, water flow and attic insulation. He’ll also check the efficiency of your furnace, boiler and water heater. If it has the potential to use energy, he’ll check it out.
Step 3: RESULTS

Step 3: RESULTS

Receive your comprehensive report and start making changes. The audit is a roadmap; you decide what changes to make and when. Some fixes are simple but effective. Turn your water heater down to 120° and you could start saving today!

As usual, here's a great article at the Christian Science Monitor about people who are doing it and saving money, and energy, and *gasp* being a little green.

We did have attic insulation installed last year and used our credit, but I'm scheduling (right now) to have this audit completed. Might as well let an expert tell me what I need to add to the To Do List.

Mama Fierceness

I'm so sad The Women's Conference is over. Only 363 days until next year's.

With Maria Shriver stepping down from her post as First Lady of California, (Oh, Wait, it's the Governator stepping down) it will be interesting to see what becomes of this amazing event. It's been going on for 20 something years, started by a First Lady of California long ago, and became a part of the lives of each incoming Governor's Wife.

With the grace and style of everything she does, Maria turned this into the largest Women's Conference in the world. I've loved every moment of the last two days, but the one that stuck with me, and will forever be a new divining rod for me, came from a discussion between Elizabeth Lesser (co-founder of The Omega Institute) and Sally Field.

Elizabeth said:
The moment we become Mamas, we become fierce protectors. It's time to take that same Mama fierceness and apply it to our workplaces and the world.

Indeed.

May you approach everything you do today with the same mama fierceness you defend your babies.

Namaste.

Thankful Thoughtful Tuesday

The Women's Conference is taking place again today. Check out yesterday's post for a live webcast.
One of yesterday's speakers was Martha Beck, a funny, engaging life coach. I dug up a few of her gems for today's Thankful, Thoughtful Tuesday.

The position that I take partly as a result of living in Asia is where you stop living according to your expectations and you become available to experience things as they are.

Use anything you can think of to understand and be understood, and you'll discover the creativity that connects you with others.

Whoever said love is blind is dead wrong. Love is the only thing that lets us see each other with the remotest accuracy.

Why Recharging Our Woman Batteries is Survival at its Best.

The Women's Conference

twc2010 on livestream.com. Broadcast Live Free

Today and tomorrow are my favorite days of the year as a woman.

I have other amazing days as a mom, and a wife, and a football fan, and a gardener, and a party girl. But today, I get to recharge my woman batteries. The core of me - the power of my soul, the depth of my spirit.

Today is the first day of The Women's Conference. An amazing gathering of women in California, and sometimes they allow a few worthy men to speak :)

I love this conference because it speaks to my spirit, and how to be a better me. Back to that list above, not a better wife, mom, football fan...because all of those come as a result, but this is about me at my most cellular level. Past conferences included topics about measuring my life with the "right" yardstick, and finding my own power instead of stealing borrowing it from others through thoughtless words, or demeaning tactics. Learning new ways to recharge and what power means.

To say I have come away from these two days with some of the greatest nuggets of my life, is not an exaggeration.

Sometimes, as women, we forget how beautiful and powerful we are. We lose our sense of community in our quest for sense of self. It is through lifting each other we become greater.

If you have a moment over the next two days, pop over to The Women's Conference and watch the webcast. The lineup is amazing, and I can promise -- based on previous events -- any moment you watch will be perfect, amazing and a powerful nugget of wisdom.

Kill Your Darlings

In writing, the saying goes, "Sometimes, to build the best book you can, you have to kill your darlings." It means editing away all the pieces that don't drive the story. Whether the particular scene is fast-paced or intense, or emotional, if it doesn't move the essential plot of the story, it must - - for the good of the book - be cut. You must Kill Your Darlings.

When I pulled these out of the garden tonight, I realized, in cooking, it's the same. The darlings, sometimes the best of the best of the garden, must die for the overall good of the meal. The beauties I nurtured and cared for all year, must sacrifice their very lives to create the best meal I could.

In tribute to their brilliance:

No Organics to MY Door!

CornImage via Wikipedia
I'm devastated.

My brother, the famous chef (If you're ever in Steamboat Springs, I'll hook you up with his info), turned me on to this fabulous service called, Door to Door Organics. Have you ever wanted organics, but the stuff at the grocery store is too expensive, looks like it's traveled way too far on a truck, or consists of a carrot and two heads of lettuce?

For $22 to $38, Door to Door Organics will deliver organics direct to your door. This week's Bitty Box ($22.66) contains these goodies:

Local Pie Pumpkin1
Roma Tomatoes
Cucumber
Romaine Lettuce
Cauliflower
Local Red Beets bunch
Bosc Pears
Fuji Apples
Valencia Oranges
Bananas2

Did you see the $22 part? For Organics? TO MY DOOR??!!

Yeah, that last part - enter devastation.

They won't deliver to MY door. *sob*  (that's crying, not "Why, you Son Of A B....)

AND for all of you near the Colorado/Kansas City/Chicago/Michigan areas you can even put it on a weekly/bi-weekly schedule so this divine goodness shows up at your door, while you're at work, every week.

I'm SO sad....

Maybe they'll come to Utah soon.

Thoughtful Thankful Tuesday

"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects." ~~ Robert A. Heinlein

Food Storage Analyzer.

I'm pretty sure Analyzer starts with "Anal" for a reason. I was born an analyzer, I'm anal about analyzing.

Imagine how excited I was when I finally found a calculator built by analyzers, for analyzers.

Emergency Essentials Calculator
If you have a couple hours, this food storage calculator will analyze every facet of your pantry. It will tell you how many days of storage you do have, how much protein is in your food storage, and glaring holes in your preparation. My overall impression: This food storage calculator is incredibly time consuming, and convoluted (perfect for analyzers).

Since it left me with a final impression it's designed to get you to buy more stuff from Emergency Essentials (=uber expensive), I went looking for a user-friendly food storage calculator for less analytical Survival Mamas.

This food storage calculator is the exact opposite. It's fast, simple and easy to read. Breaks items into sections, and while it also has a list at the bottom where you can go to fill in the items you're missing, this calculator seems designed to educate people on amounts needed in their food storage to survive for one year, instead of a pressing need to hock wares.

No matter which one you decide to use, it's always a good idea to track your food storage against a benchmark. Are you preparing for a year, 6 months, 3 months, 72 hours?

The Good Folks at LAFD

This post started with the good folks of Herriman. Yesterday and today, volunteers are reseeding 275 burned acres by hand. I got to be a Mountainside Volunteer to direct all the good people where to toss their seeds. I hadn't been to that side of the mountain, and it was amazing to see what the fire consumed up close and a-lot-too-personal. I'm again amazed at how few homes were burned. The second house from my fire post is still standing, though all their little tiny trees are crispy. But the home stands, thanks again to the amazing efforts from some heroic firemen.

I met some incredible people yesterday, all great residents of Herriman (most members of the LDS Faith) and heard some incredible stories of survival and preparedness. One gentleman (married 42 years to the same Survival Mama) gave me a great resource in the Los Angeles Fire Department. I'm still on the lookout for the trauma kit they're supposed to have on their site, but I did find this Ebook on preparedness. If you don't already have one (boo) go download this one and give it a read.

LAFD Emergency Preparedness

Most of the volunteers I got to meet were part of the evacuation order. It was interesting to hear what they were able to grab. Most of them took their 72 hour kits and external hard drives.

Next steps for me:

What's up with Utah Restaurants?

Dine out for Farms Week still has a few days left. Running from October 10 through the 16th, you can support your local - and nationwide - farms by dining out this week. Hopefully one of your favorite restaurants is on the list...not a single one here in Utah.

Although no Utah restaurants aren't participating in contributing to the American Farmland Trust via this event, they are doing their part to support our local farmers. One of the coolest, organized, dense websites I've ever perused is over at Slow Food Utah. Find everything from Beans to Wine: from planet to plate. I found local pork farmers, and local Root Beer Brewers (which made me smile).

There's also a fantastic "Get Involved" section. I think I'm going to love this little site. Slow Food Utah is part of Slow Food USA....maybe there's a Slow Food wherever you are.

Sinus Pain is Not My Friend

Treating My Sinus Pain with Sustainable Remedies. Or Tylenol.

Winter kicks my butt. I don't have summer allergies, but Fall brings my Winter Allergies in full swing. Over the weekend, my allergies turned in to a full-blown Sinus Headache. I'm a major fan of Tylenol Sinus Congestion and Pain Severe, but wanted to try a few sustainable remedies.

It takes me a few days of misery for my lymph glands to get my attention. Gravity doesn't allow the lymph glands to drain, and they fill up with crap. (I'm sure there's a technical term). When I was sick with Little Monkey I was desperate to find a cure for my winter sickness and read a great article (somewhere) about Salamba Sarvangasana (ShoulderStand).

By giving the lymph glands an option to drain the goo, they're free to do their jobs again, and the body can flush the toxins. I wish I would remember to do this on the first day, because nothing else works as well.

(This also resulted in an emergency visit to Labor and Delivery - don't do this if you're preggo. Please.)

Check out Eternity Yoga for other yoga poses.
The Yoga Journal has some great stuff too.

After spending ten minutes upside down, I enjoyed a nice glass of Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV). Yes, really. To be fair, I like vinegar, so this wasn't a tough challenge for me, but I could see where it could be. The peeps over at Earth Clinic featured a great article about the benefits of ACV and its effect on (ew) mucus.

Feeling much, much better.
Good thing, since I'm T minus 2 hours for monkey arrival.

Do you have any other great recommendations?

Happy 100 Followers

What a super, amazing, humble day.
I'm a little speechless...so I'll leave it at that.
